“Why don’t you cycle to work?”

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته،

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن تبعهم إلى يوم الدين وبعد

So what we should do is get you a job here and buy you a bicycle so you can cycle to work“, he said to me.

I kept thinking… “Why doesnt HE cycle to work?” but I didnt want to start anything.

Days go by with him pushing the same thing: “You can get a job here and cycle to work you can get good experience“.

I said: “It’s not safe to cycle out here, I’d rather take one of those taxis

He started to get mad and talk about me just not wanting to work and all that.

Look if I wanted to work for experience I would have accepted the other offer making $75,000 a year with full benefits and not have to cycle to work, I’m not going to work for $400 a month and risk my life cycling to work

Why did he push the issue of cycling to work?

We had an argument in the van about the Ulemaa and the Environment. He kept saying “What are your Ulemaa doing about the serious issues? About the environment?

I said: “They’re educating the people about what will save them from the Punishment in the Next Life

He said: “What about the environment, what do they do about that?

Well they dont drive gas guzzler SUV’s like you do, if a person understands Islaam, then they will be more respectful to the environment as that’s a part of the religion

He gets angry and tries to argue some more but my aunt tells him to calm down.

So then I heard today that his son’s father in law asked him why he doesnt cycle to work (rather than drive… and “pollute the environment”)

He replied: “Well it’s not safe to cycle the streets here

  1. SubhanAllaah Akhee

This character reminds me of my father and would have said the typical response, exactly one of those types of people who says one thing and does another, Yaneey, Do as I say not as I do, WAllaahu Mustaan!

You are exactly on point about the person that if they understand Islaam then they would be more respectful to there environment and surroundings because even as Muslims we are not to purpose “waste” things or do anything of this sort.

    Nice point Akhee

  2. This requires a LOL with capital letters.

What do they do about the environment? They don’t drive SUVs. That’s an earth shattering statement right there.

  3. Yea this mentality is prominent. It’s a shame. You really feel like smacking the person but you just cant. I mean some people are so big headed they think their efforts in the Dunya override the efforts of the Ulemaa in the Dunya and Aakhira. Just because a Shaykh is busy teaching ‘aqeedah and not being physically involved in planting trees they think they’re above the Shaykh??
